Did you know that in the1990’s Americans shelled out more than $30 billion per year on weight loss pills, supplements, and crash diet plans? Have you? And even though we’re now spending more than $50 billion per year on these gimmicks (1), we (as a population) are fatter and unhealthier than ever before. Obviously, something isn’t working.
And did you know that the crash diets, commonly used in “doctor supervised” weight-control programs and the ones marketed by the weight loss industry are almost always unsuccessful…and downright DANGEROUS? One study found that the weight regain rates for these gimmicky programs approach nearly 100%! (2)
When it comes to extremely restrictive, unsustainable, crash diets like- drastically cutting calories, depriving yourself of nourishing food, or taking pills and shots that chemically reduce appetite… the biggest loser is, unfortunately, you, your waistline, and your health.
If you’ve ever followed drastic diet changes like these, you may have lost several pounds in the first few days. However, most of this vanishing weight can be attributed to the loss of water that happens as a result of depriving your body of vital carbohydrates (since carbs hold water inside the body). Then, after the diet was over you probably noticed the pounds starting to creep back on, right?
So if you’re ready to put an end to the madness, then what you’re about to read on this page will save your waistline…and even your heart since researchers have shown that repeated crash dieting also increases your risk of DYING from heart disease! (3)

As soon as you learn the 5 ways crash diets are making you fatter you will also discover the healthiest and most sustainable solution to fix the problems caused by these radical diets. The fact is, there is an easy and delicious way for you to keep your body healthy and lean without the use of harmful crash diets. But first, here are 5 things you must AVOID at all
Step 1. Stop Hurting Your Metabolism
If you want to lose weight it might seem like the best thing you can do is drastically cut your calories but… think again. When you dramatically reduce your caloric intake it can cause your metabolism to take a nose dive. This occurs partly because low caloric/carbohydrate intake suppresses your thyroid, which is the master regulator of your metabolism.
When your body is not being fed the correct amount of calories it needs to function it will make adjustments to your metabolism to conserve energy. This means that anytime you move, whether it be walking to the mailbox or running on a treadmill, you will burn fewer calories. Then, we you normal amounts of food again, your body stores more those calories as fat because your metabolism has already been slowed.
Plus, research shows that the metabolic decline that occurs when you follow low calorie crash diets makes subsequent weight loss much harder! (4) This is an extremely negative consequence considering most people who lose weight using crash diets gain back all the weight back, and then some.
Step 2. Save Your Precious Metabolic Tissue
As you now know, restrictive crash dieting reduces your ability to burn calories. Another reason for this is because crash diets cause your body to burn your lean tissue as fuel. That means the weight loss you see on the scale doesn’t just come from water loss…it also comes from muscle loss. (5)
Since muscle is the most metabolic tissue in your body (ie. it burns calories), the less you have the lower your metabolism will be and the harder it will be to lose weight and keep it off.
One study found that a group of dieters on put on a restrictive diet lost more weight than the other 2 groups who were put on less restrictive diets. Although the “extreme” dieting group lost about 34 pounds in 8 weeks a SCHOCKING 44% of it was lean body tissue! (6)
This is not the kind of weight loss you want because not only does it decrease your metabolism even further it also leaves your body looking wrinkly and saggy. That “skinny fat” look if you know what I mean
Step 3. Avoid Robbing Your Body of Vital Nutrients
Your body needs many essential vitamins and nutrients to function at optimal levels. Crash diets make it nearly impossible to obtain the nutrients your body needs for health. For instance, losing a lot of water weight (as carbs are restricted) causes your body to release many vital water-soluble vitamins like B vitamins and vitamin C, among others.
When your body is stripped of vital nutrients it starts craving the wrong foods and normal hormone signaling is completely disrupted. Both of these effects make you want to eat more food and when you do your brain doesn’t receive the proper signals that you’re “full” because your hunger/satiety hormones are all messed up.
It’s safe to say if you’ve ever followed a restrictive crash diet your body was screaming for nourishment. It probably still is!
Step 4. Get Off The Weight Loss Roller Coaster
When it comes to crash diets, “Will I lose weight?” isn’t the question. The real question is, “Will I keep it off?” Sadly, the answer is, probably not. The vast majority of people who go on crash diets to lose weight, gain the weight back as soon as the diet is over.
This is why crash dieting leads repeated bouts of weight loss and regain which is extremely bad for your health. Studies show there is a link between weigh yo-yoing and all-cause mortality and mortality from coronary heart disease. (7)
As if an increased risk of death from any cause wasn’t enough, the real nail in the weight loss coffin is the fact that with each yo-yo in weight the body responds by regaining the weight faster and making subsequent weight loss harder.
One study found it is FOUR times harder for yo-yo dieters to lose weight than for those who have not had repeated bouts of weight loss and regain. (8)
Step 5. Stop “Shocking” Your Blood Sugar
When you are on a restrictive crash diet many systems in your body suffer. One of them being your blood sugar and insulin levels. Many of the prepackaged, processed, so called “diet” foods are actually high in sugar which will cause your blood sugar levels to spike.
And overtime, high blood sugar and insulin levels can cause your body’s cells to become “resistant” to insulin. This means your insulin is no longer able to do its important job of removing excess sugar in the blood. And since high blood sugar is very dangerous, your body, as a protective mechanism, intelligently packs it away in your FAT CELLS! Not good if you want to lose weight.
One study actually found that obese individuals who lost weight using a restrictive crash diet went on to develop type II diabetes even though NONE of them had prior issues with their sensitivity to insulin or blood sugar levels. That’s insane, right!?!
The researchers hypothesized this occurred due to the development of insulin resistance while on the crash diet. (8)
Plus, if you restrict your food intake all together you send your blood sugar plummeting to a level that makes you feel “hungry”. You know that feeling when you just aren’t quite yourself because you’re starving? That’s what happens when your blood sugar drops. Not good mainly because it can cause excessive “rebound” eating when you finally do have food in front of you.
Plus, low blood sugar is a form of stress, which signals the release of the stress hormone cortisol. In high amounts, cortisol tells your body to store more belly fat!
WARNING:Deprivation is NOT The Solution to Quick and Sustained Weight Loss
Bottom line is this: crash diets are not the quick fix weight loss solutions they have been portrayed to be. They are unsafe, unrealistic, unsustainable and worst of all they force your body to cling onto the very fat you’re trying to get rid of.
Any weight loss seen on a crash diet will NEVER last because of the negative effects depriving yourself of food and nutrients has on your metabolism, your hormones, and your lean muscle mass.
So, is it really worth it?
