Easiest Way To Increase Fibre

Ok. We know that we need at least 25 grams of fibre daily, so how do we do it?  Simple. Don’t skip breakfast!

Cereal is the simplest way to get more fibre into your diet, and can lower your intake of fat. In fact, one study found that people who ate two bowls of high fibre cereal daily, actually reduced the amount of fat they ate by 10% without even trying.

Develop a habit of reading labels on cereal packets to see if there is more than 5 grams of fibre per serve. The one I personally use is Kellogg’s All-Bran Original, with about 10g fibre. You can flavour it with your preferred fruit – I like sultana’s.

Oats are very good for you, but please read the labels, as you don’t want to buy a product fortified with sugar. Oats have been proven to lower the bad LDL cholesterol ( low density lipo-protein ), and by adding just 2 tablespoons of ground flaxseed daily, you can reduce total cholesterol, and LDL. Be careful, though, as flaxseed is a powerful laxative, so go easy on it.

Weatbix or vitabrits are excellent! Very bland, so be sure to flavour it with some natural sugar (fruit).

Avoid cereal bars! Most are loaded with sugar, which will provide a quick burst of energy ( which you may not even notice, by the way, but your bloodstream will, with a corresponding overdose of insulin, which will inhibit your efforts to reduce existing fat stores. ).
