Breakfast is one of the hottest debated topics on the Internet.
You’ve got those that claim it’s the most important meal of the day, and those who say you should skip breakfast completely.
What’s the truth?
Myth #1: Eating breakfast helps control hunger
It’s common practice to eat breakfast first thing in the morning to raise your blood sugar and control insulin levels. While insulin is crucial for muscle growth, it’s also responsible for fat storage. Eating a carb heavy breakfast (like cereal and toast) can actually decrease insulin sensitivity… meaning you actually get MORE hungry!
Myth #2: Breakfast increases your metabolism
The idea that not eating a big breakfast somehow drastically slows down your metabolism is just not accurate. The amount of calories you’re taking in and the composition of those calories – protein, fat, and carbs – are really what impacts metabolism.
In a recent paper published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, researchers delved into dozens of studies involving the relationship between eating breakfast and bodyweight. The researchers concluded that breakfast being the most important meal of the day is only shared belief, as there is no long term research proven conclusion that eating breakfast leads to lower body fat.
Myth #3: Breakfast helps control weight
There are tons of studies out there that claim eating a big, well balanced breakfast helps promote weight loss. However, there are no long term studies that show a direct correlation between eating breakfast and weight loss.
